Straight answers to common questions
Answers about Topaz signup, emergency calling, prepaid credit, calling rates, phones and phone numbers.
What is Topaz?
A hosted business phone system. You manage users, phones, numbers, call routing and voicemail in one Control panel, and pay for calls from prepaid credit. Topaz is in early access.
Can I call 911?
No. 911 and emergency calling are not supported during early access. Do not use Topaz as your only phone service where emergency calling may be needed; keep another way to call for help, such as a mobile phone. Details
How do I sign up?
Go to signup.topaz.tel, enter your company name, your name and email, choose your starting credit ($10, $25, $50 or $100) and pay on Stripe’s hosted checkout. Your account is created immediately and we email you a link to set your password.
I didn’t get the welcome email.
It comes from no-reply@mail.topaz.tel and the link is valid for 72 hours. Check your spam folder. If it’s missing or expired, use “Forgot password” on the Control panel login page with the email you signed up with.
Are there monthly or per-user fees?
No platform, per-user or per-device fees. You pay for calls and phone numbers from prepaid credit (numbers are $10 a month each, or from $4 a month prepaid), and can add channels for unlimited US & Canada calling.
How much do calls cost?
Calls to the US & Canada cost $0.02/min. Inbound calls to your numbers cost $0.01/min. Calls to US & Canada toll-free numbers and calls between your own extensions are free. Calls are billed per minute in 60-second increments, with a 60-second minimum.
What is a channel?
A two-way channel is one call at a time, inbound or outbound, with unlimited calling to regular US & Canada numbers: $30 a month, $18 a month for 12 months ($216 upfront) or $12 a month for 36 months ($432 upfront). Calls beyond your channels are charged per minute from your credit, so none are blocked. Add channels in the Control panel under My Account › Billing. Fair use applies: channels are for your own business’s calls, not autodialers, call centres or reselling minutes.
Which countries can I call?
You can call the 48 contiguous US states, Washington DC and Canada (except Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut), plus US & Canada toll-free numbers. Alaska, Hawaii, US territories, the Caribbean, premium-rate (900) numbers and international destinations are not available yet.
How do I add credit?
In the Control panel, open My Account › Billing and choose Add credit to charge the card you saved at signup. To pay with another card, replace it there in Stripe’s secure form. When you sign up we save your card for automatic top-ups: when your credit falls below $5, we add $25. Change or turn this off in the Control panel under My Account › Billing.
What happens when my credit runs out?
We email you when your balance drops below $5. If your credit runs out, paid calls stop until you add more; calls between your own extensions keep working.
Can I get a refund?
Unused credit can be refunded on request. Refunds and chargebacks are deducted from your balance.
How do I get a phone number?
Pick one when you sign up by entering an area code. During early access, more numbers are added on request: email support@mail.topaz.tel with the area code you’d like. Each phone number costs $10 a month, taken from your credit every 30 days, or prepay it in the Control panel: $6 a month for 12 months ($72 upfront) or $4 a month for 36 months ($144 upfront). Eligible new accounts (card saved at signup) get their first number’s first month free. If your credit can’t cover a number’s monthly fee, we keep it for 7 days, then release it.
Who can change our phone system?
Admins manage the whole account in the Control panel: users, phones, numbers, call routing and billing. Other users sign in to call from the Topaz Softphone and can change only their own profile and password. Give the Admin role (in SmartPBX, on the user) only to people who manage the account.
Can I keep my existing number?
Porting an existing number is available by request. How long it takes depends on your current provider, so keep that service active until your number works on Topaz.
Which phones work with Topaz?
Every user can call from their browser with the Topaz Softphone in the Control panel. Any standard SIP desk phone or softphone app works too, for example Poly (Polycom), Yealink, Grandstream, Zoiper, Linphone, MicroSIP or Bria. Setup guide
Is my card information safe?
Payments are taken on Stripe’s hosted checkout. Your card details never touch Topaz.
